Galatians 4:29 — Persecution by the Flesh-Born

Galatians 4:29 states that the one born after the flesh persecuted the one born after the Spirit. The verse presents a continuing pattern: what happened in the earlier account is also happening now.

Those born after the flesh and those born after the Spirit are distinguished in the passage by their origin. The statement identifies persecution as the action of the former against the latter, rather than as a neutral description of disagreement.

The verse is part of an argument about children of promise and inheritance. Its emphasis is that the present opposition reflects the same conflict already described in the preceding comparison.

In the surrounding passage, Abraham’s two sons are distinguished as one born through a handmaid and one through the free woman. The son of the handmaid is born after the flesh, while the son of the free woman is born through promise; the Galatian believers are then identified as children of promise as Isaac was.

The chapter contrasts bondage with freedom and identifies the believers as the free woman’s children. In this setting, the persecution in verse 29 follows the contrast between the flesh-born and the Spirit-born and precedes the command not to allow the handmaid’s son to inherit with the free woman’s son.
