Romans 1:22 states the outcome of knowing God without glorifying him as God or giving thanks: those who profess themselves wise become fools. The verse does not equate intellectual ability with genuine wisdom; it describes a moral and spiritual failure that darkens reasoning.
The claim to wisdom is therefore exposed as self-deception. Their vain reasonings and darkened heart, mentioned in the preceding verse, lead them away from acknowledging the Creator rather than enabling them to perceive reality rightly.
The following verse shows the direction of this folly: the glory of the incorruptible God is exchanged for the likeness of a corruptible man, birds, four-footed beasts, and creeping things. Wisdom is lost precisely where God is displaced by created representations.
