John 1:35-51 Calling the Disciples

John 1:35-51 shows how disciples are formed: a faithful witness points to Jesus, hearers respond by following, Jesus invites them to abide with him, and they in turn bring others. Titles accumulate, Lamb of God, Messiah, Son of God, King of Israel, Son of Man, each revealing a different facet of who he is. The chapter closes with a promise that the disciples will see heaven opened and angels ascending and descending upon the Son of Man. Here, in the opening of John's Gospel, the heavens are not closed, and the question, 'What do you seek?' still waits for a personal answer.
