1.그러나 이제는 나보다 젊은 자들이 나를 비웃는구나 그들의 아비들은 내가 보기에 내 양 떼를 지키는 개 중에도 둘 만하지 못한 자들이니라But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, Whose fathers I disdained to set with the dogs of my flock.
2.그들의 기력이 쇠잔하였으니 그들의 손의 힘이 내게 무슨 소용이 있으랴Yea, the strength of their hands, whereto should it profit me? Men in whom ripe age is perished.
3.그들은 곧 궁핍과 기근으로 인하여 파리하며 캄캄하고 메마른 땅에서 마른 흙을 씹으며They are gaunt with want and famine; They gnaw the dry ground, in the gloom of wasteness and desolation.
4.떨기나무 가운데에서 짠 나물을 꺾으며 대싸리 뿌리로 먹을 거리를 삼느니라They pluck salt-wort by the bushes; And the roots of the broom are their food.
5.무리가 그들에게 소리를 지름으로 도둑 같이 사람들 가운데에서 쫓겨나서They are driven forth from the midst of men; They cry after them as after a thief;
6.침침한 골짜기와 흙 구덩이와 바위 굴에서 살며So that they dwell in frightful valleys, In holes of the earth and of the rocks.
7.떨기나무 가운데에서 부르짖으며 가시나무 아래에 모여 있느니라Among the bushes they bray; Under the nettles they are gathered together.
8.그들은 본래 미련한 자의 자식이요 이름 없는 자들의 자식으로서 고토에서 쫓겨난 자들이니라They are children of fools, yea, children of base men; They were scourged out of the land.
9.이제는 그들이 나를 노래로 조롱하며 내가 그들의 놀림거리가 되었으며And now I am become their song, Yea, I am a byword unto them.
10.그들이 나를 미워하여 멀리 하고 서슴지 않고 내 얼굴에 침을 뱉는도다They abhor me, they stand aloof from me, And spare not to spit in my face.
11.이는 하나님이 내 활시위를 늘어지게 하시고 나를 곤고하게 하심으로 무리가 내 앞에서 굴레를 벗었음이니라For he hath loosed his cord, and afflicted me; And they have cast off the bridle before me.
12.그들이 내 오른쪽에서 일어나 내 발에 덫을 놓으며 나를 대적하여 길을 에워싸며Upon my right hand rise the rabble; They thrust aside my feet, And they cast up against me their ways of destruction.
13.그들이 내 길을 헐고 내 재앙을 재촉하는데도 도울 자가 없구나They mar my path, They set forward my calamity, Even men that have no helper.
14.그들은 성을 파괴하고 그 파괴한 가운데로 몰려드는 것 같이 내게로 달려드니As through a wide breach they come: In the midst of the ruin they roll themselves upon me.
15.순식간에 공포가 나를 에워싸고 그들이 내 품위를 바람 같이 날려 버리니 나의 구원은 구름 같이 지나가 버렸구나Terrors are turned upon me; They chase mine honor as the wind; And my welfare is passed away as a cloud.
16.이제는 내 생명이 내 속에서 녹으니 환난 날이 나를 사로잡음이라And now my soul is poured out within me; Days of affliction have taken hold upon me.
17.밤이 되면 내 뼈가 쑤시니 나의 아픔이 쉬지 아니하는구나In the night season my bones are pierced in me, And the pains that gnaw me take no rest.
18.그가 큰 능력으로 나의 옷을 떨쳐 버리시며 나의 옷깃처럼 나를 휘어잡으시는구나By God's great force is my garment disfigured; It bindeth me about as the collar of my coat.
19.하나님이 나를 진흙 가운데 던지셨고 나를 티끌과 재 같게 하셨구나He hath cast me into the mire, And I am become like dust and ashes.
20.내가 주께 부르짖으나 주께서 대답하지 아니하시오며 내가 섰사오나 주께서 나를 돌아보지 아니하시나이다I cry unto thee, and thou dost not answer me: I stand up, and thou gazest at me.
21.주께서 돌이켜 내게 잔혹하게 하시고 힘 있는 손으로 나를 대적하시나이다Thou art turned to be cruel to me; With the might of thy hand thou persecutest me.
22.나를 바람 위에 들어 불려가게 하시며 무서운 힘으로 나를 던져 버리시나이다Thou liftest me up to the wind, thou causest me to ride upon it; And thou dissolvest me in the storm.
23.내가 아나이다 주께서 나를 죽게 하사 모든 생물을 위하여 정한 집으로 돌려보내시리이다For I know that thou wilt bring me to death, And to the house appointed for all living.
24.그러나 사람이 넘어질 때에 어찌 손을 펴지 아니하며 재앙을 당할 때에 어찌 도움을 부르짖지 아니하리이까Howbeit doth not one stretch out the hand in his fall? Or in his calamity therefore cry for help?
25.고생의 날을 보내는 자를 위하여 내가 울지 아니하였는가 빈궁한 자를 위하여 내 마음에 근심하지 아니하였는가Did not I weep for him that was in trouble? Was not my soul grieved for the needy?
26.내가 복을 바랐더니 화가 왔고 광명을 기다렸더니 흑암이 왔구나When I looked for good, then evil came; And when I waited for light, there came darkness.
27.내 마음이 들끓어 고요함이 없구나 환난 날이 내게 임하였구나My heart is troubled, and resteth not; Days of affliction are come upon me.
28.나는 햇볕에 쬐지 않고도 검어진 피부를 가지고 걸으며 회중 가운데 서서 도움을 부르짖고 있느니라I go mourning without the sun: I stand up in the assembly, and cry for help.
29.나는 이리의 형제요 타조의 벗이로구나I am a brother to jackals, And a companion to ostriches.
30.나를 덮고 있는 피부는 검어졌고 내 뼈는 열기로 말미암아 탔구나My skin is black, and falleth from me, And my bones are burned with heat.
31.내 수금은 통곡이 되었고 내 피리는 애곡이 되었구나Therefore is my harp turned to mourning, And my pipe into the voice of them that weep.
