1.이 땅에 사는 인생에게 힘든 노동이 있지 아니하겠느냐 그의 날이 품꾼의 날과 같지 아니하겠느냐Is there not a warfare to man upon earth? And are not his days like the days of a hireling?
2.종은 저녁 그늘을 몹시 바라고 품꾼은 그의 삯을 기다리나니As a servant that earnestly desireth the shadow, And as a hireling that looketh for his wages:
3.이와 같이 내가 여러 달째 고통을 받으니 고달픈 밤이 내게 작정되었구나So am I made to possess months of misery, And wearisome nights are appointed to me.
4.내가 누울 때면 말하기를 언제나 일어날까, 언제나 밤이 갈까 하며 새벽까지 이리 뒤척, 저리 뒤척 하는구나When I lie down, I say, When shall I arise, and the night be gone? And I am full of tossings to and fro unto the dawning of the day.
5.내 살에는 구더기와 흙 덩이가 의복처럼 입혀졌고 내 피부는 굳어졌다가 터지는구나My flesh is clothed with worms and clods of dust; My skin closeth up, and breaketh out afresh.
6.나의 날은 베틀의 북보다 빠르니 희망 없이 보내는구나My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, And are spent without hope.
7.내 생명이 한낱 바람 같음을 생각하옵소서 나의 눈이 다시는 행복을 보지 못하리이다Oh remember that my life is a breath: Mine eye shall no more see good.
8.나를 본 자의 눈이 다시는 나를 보지 못할 것이고 주의 눈이 나를 향하실지라도 내가 있지 아니하리이다The eye of him that seeth me shall behold me no more; Thine eyes shall be upon me, but I shall not be.
9.구름이 사라져 없어짐 같이 스올로 내려가는 자는 다시 올라오지 못할 것이오니As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away, So he that goeth down to Sheol shall come up no more.
10.그는 다시 자기 집으로 돌아가지 못하겠고 자기 처소도 다시 그를 알지 못하리이다He shall return no more to his house, Neither shall his place know him any more.
11.그런즉 내가 내 입을 금하지 아니하고 내 영혼의 아픔 때문에 말하며 내 마음의 괴로움 때문에 불평하리이다Therefore I will not refrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.
12.내가 바다니이까 바다 괴물이니이까 주께서 어찌하여 나를 지키시나이까Am I a sea, or a sea-monster, That thou settest a watch over me?
13.혹시 내가 말하기를 내 잠자리가 나를 위로하고 내 침상이 내 수심을 풀리라 할 때에When I say, My bed shall comfort me, My couch shall ease my complaint;
14.주께서 꿈으로 나를 놀라게 하시고 환상으로 나를 두렵게 하시나이다Then thou scarest me with dreams, And terrifiest me through visions:
15.이러므로 내 마음이 뼈를 깎는 고통을 겪느니 차라리 숨이 막히는 것과 죽는 것을 택하리이다So that my soul chooseth strangling, And death rather than these my bones.
16.내가 생명을 싫어하고 영원히 살기를 원하지 아니하오니 나를 놓으소서 내 날은 헛 것이니이다I loathe my life; I would not live alway: Let me alone; for my days are vanity.
17.사람이 무엇이기에 주께서 그를 크게 만드사 그에게 마음을 두시고What is man, that thou shouldest magnify him, And that thou shouldest set thy mind upon him,
18.아침마다 권징하시며 순간마다 단련하시나이까And that thou shouldest visit him every morning, And try him every moment?
19.주께서 내게서 눈을 돌이키지 아니하시며 내가 침을 삼킬 동안도 나를 놓지 아니하시기를 어느 때까지 하시리이까How long wilt thou not look away from me, Nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle?
20.사람을 감찰하시는 이여 내가 범죄하였던들 주께 무슨 해가 되오리이까 어찌하여 나를 당신의 과녁으로 삼으셔서 내게 무거운 짐이 되게 하셨나이까If I have sinned, what I unto thee, O thou watcher of men? Why hast thou set me as a mark for thee, So that I am a burden to myself?
21.주께서 어찌하여 내 허물을 사하여 주지 아니하시며 내 죄악을 제거하여 버리지 아니하시나이까 내가 이제 흙에 누우리니 주께서 나를 애써 찾으실지라도 내가 남아 있지 아니하리이다And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away mine iniquity? For now shall I lie down in the dust; And thou wilt seek me diligently, but I shall not be.
