Esther
Prophets and Exile
Esther, originally named Hadassah, was a Jew living in the Persian Empire after the exile. Chosen as queen, she later risked her life to intercede for her people and became a classic example of God's deliverance working through human agency.

Mordecai was a Benjamite Jew living in Susa whose faithfulness—most notably his refusal to bow to Haman—helped trigger the plot against the Jews; under God's providence he was exalted to become second only to King Ahasuerus, seeking the welfare (shalom) of his people and speaking peace to his kindred.
