这段经文的意思
The passage identifies the cloud as the visible sign of the Lord's presence over the tabernacle. By day it appeared as a cloud and by night as the appearance of fire (vv. 15-16), so that the people could always see where the center of the camp was and were never left without a marker of divine presence. The text emphasizes the continuous nature of this sign with the phrase translated 'So it was alway,' indicating that the cloud-and-fire phenomenon was not a one-time event but the regular state of the tabernacle.
Movement of the community is tied entirely to the movement of the cloud. Verses 17-18 set the governing rule: when the cloud was taken up from over the Tent, Israel journeyed; when it settled, Israel encamped. The repeated phrase 'at the commandment of Jehovah' frames the cloud's shifting as the mechanism through which the Lord issued marching and camping orders, making each stage of the journey a direct response to divine instruction rather than to human strategy.
The remaining verses (19-23) catalog how the timetable varied without changing the rule. Whether the cloud tarried many days, a few days, from evening until morning, or for two days, a month, or a year, the people remained encamped; when it was taken up, they journeyed. The closing verse reiterates that Israel kept the 'charge of Jehovah' through Moses, presenting the passage as a pattern of obedience that follows the Lord's timing rather than enforcing a fixed human schedule.
背景
The chapter opens with instructions for the Passover in its appointed season, including a provision for those who are unclean or on a distant journey to keep it in the second month (vv. 9-14). The tabernacle passage (vv. 15-23) follows directly, moving from the calendar of Israel's worship to the daily rhythm of Israel's journey under the cloud. The latter section emphasizes that both the religious calendar and the camp's movements are governed by the Lord's command rather than by human initiative.
Within the chapter as a whole, the two sections together present a people whose sacred life and daily travels are both aligned to divine instruction. The cloud functions as the link between the tabernacle, where the Lord dwelt among Israel, and the wilderness road, where Israel followed the Lord's leading day by day.
常见问题
What does the cloud over the tabernacle represent?
In the passage itself, the cloud and the appearance of fire by night are the visible form of the Lord's presence over the tabernacle, the place described as the tent of the testimony. Its presence marked the center of the camp and gave Israel a signal for when to stay and when to move.
How did Israel know when to break camp?
According to the passage, the Israelite camp broke only when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, and stayed in place whenever the cloud remained. Whether the cloud rested for two days, a month, or a year, the people followed the same rule, and the text attributes the moves to the commandment of Jehovah conveyed through Moses.
Does the passage give a fixed schedule for the journey?
No. The passage explicitly lists different lengths of time the cloud tarried, from a single overnight to a year, and treats each case as an instance of the same rule. The emphasis is on Israel conforming to the Lord's timing rather than on a predetermined timetable of the people's own making.
