인물生平

Lot originally journeyed with his uncle Abraham from Ur and Haran, and the blessings of the promised land and the Abrahamic covenant had reached him as well. When Abram's and Lot's possessions became so great that the land could not support them both, and their herdsmen quarreled, Abram proposed that they separate. Lot lifted up his eyes and saw the entire Plain of the Jordan—well watered everywhere like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt. So Lot chose for himself the whole Plain of the Jordan and journeyed eastward, and the two men separated from each other. Lot moved his tents as far as Sodom and eventually settled in the city, whose people were exceptionally wicked against the Lord. When the two angels came to Sodom at evening, Lot was sitting at the gate—a place in the ancient Near East associated with judgment and hospitality—suggesting that even amid the city he retained some patriarchal customs of welcoming strangers. He saw the visitors, rose to meet them, bowed his face to the ground, and pressed them to stay at his house, faithfully upholding the duty of hospitality. Yet the chaos of that night revealed the corruption of the city he had chosen. By Abraham's intercession and the Lord's mercy, Lot was rescued from Sodom's judgment, and his account became a lasting testimony entwining warning and compassion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What was the relationship between Lot and Abraham?

Lot was Abraham's nephew—the son of Haran, Abraham's brother (cf. Genesis 11). He had followed his uncle from Ur and Haran into the promised land, so he too stood within the blessings of the Abrahamic covenant.

Why did Lot choose the entire Plain of the Jordan?

According to the text, the land could not support both Abram and Lot because their possessions had grown so great, and their herdsmen quarreled. Abram proposed they separate, and Lot lifted up his eyes and saw that the whole Plain of the Jordan was well watered like the garden of the Lord; so he chose that region for himself and journeyed eastward.

What does it signify that Lot was sitting at the gate of Sodom?

In the ancient Near East the city gate served as the public center for judgment and social affairs, so Lot sitting at the gate suggests he held a recognized position in the city. Yet his rising to meet the visitors and bowing with his face to the ground shows that he still upheld the patriarchal custom of hospitality.
