1.여인에게서 태어난 사람은 생애가 짧고 걱정이 가득하며Man, that is born of a woman, Is of few days, and full of trouble.
2.그는 꽃과 같이 자라나서 시들며 그림자 같이 지나가며 머물지 아니하거늘He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: He fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.
3.이와 같은 자를 주께서 눈여겨 보시나이까 나를 주 앞으로 이끌어서 재판하시나이까And dost thou open thine eyes upon such a one, And bringest me into judgment with thee?
4.누가 깨끗한 것을 더러운 것 가운데에서 낼 수 있으리이까 하나도 없나이다Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.
5.그의 날을 정하셨고 그의 달 수도 주께 있으므로 그의 규례를 정하여 넘어가지 못하게 하셨사온즉Seeing his days are determined, The number of his months is with thee, And thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;
6.그에게서 눈을 돌이켜 그가 품꾼 같이 그의 날을 마칠 때까지 그를 홀로 있게 하옵소서Look away from him, that he may rest, Till he shall accomplish, as a hireling, his day.
7.나무는 희망이 있나니 찍힐지라도 다시 움이 나서 연한 가지가 끊이지 아니하며For there is hope of a tree, If it be cut down, that it will sprout again, And that the tender branch thereof will not cease.
8.그 뿌리가 땅에서 늙고 줄기가 흙에서 죽을지라도Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, And the stock thereof die in the ground;
9.물 기운에 움이 돋고 가지가 뻗어서 새로 심은 것과 같거니와Yet through the scent of water it will bud, And put forth boughs like a plant.
10.장정이라도 죽으면 소멸되나니 인생이 숨을 거두면 그가 어디 있느냐But man dieth, and is laid low: Yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?
11.물이 바다에서 줄어들고 강물이 잦아서 마름 같이As the waters fail from the sea, And the river wasteth and drieth up;
12.사람이 누우면 다시 일어나지 못하고 하늘이 없어지기까지 눈을 뜨지 못하며 잠을 깨지 못하느니라So man lieth down and riseth not: Till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, Nor be roused out of their sleep.
13.주는 나를 스올에 감추시며 주의 진노를 돌이키실 때까지 나를 숨기시고 나를 위하여 규례를 정하시고 나를 기억하옵소서Oh that thou wouldest hide me in Sheol, That thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, That thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!
14.장정이라도 죽으면 어찌 다시 살리이까 나는 나의 모든 고난의 날 동안을 참으면서 풀려나기를 기다리겠나이다If a man die, shall he live again? All the days of my warfare would I wait, Till my release should come.
15.주께서는 나를 부르시겠고 나는 대답하겠나이다 주께서는 주의 손으로 지으신 것을 기다리시겠나이다Thou wouldest call, and I would answer thee: Thou wouldest have a desire to the work of thy hands.
16.그러하온데 이제 주께서 나의 걸음을 세시오니 나의 죄를 감찰하지 아니하시나이까But now thou numberest my steps: Dost thou not watch over my sin?
17.주는 내 허물을 주머니에 봉하시고 내 죄악을 싸매시나이다My transgression is sealed up in a bag, And thou fastenest up mine iniquity.
18.무너지는 산은 반드시 흩어지고 바위는 그 자리에서 옮겨가고But the mountain falling cometh to nought; And the rock is removed out of its place;
19.물은 돌을 닳게 하고 넘치는 물은 땅의 티끌을 씻어버리나이다 이와 같이 주께서는 사람의 희망을 끊으시나이다The waters wear the stones; The overflowings thereof wash away the dust of the earth: So thou destroyest the hope of man.
20.주께서 사람을 영원히 이기셔서 떠나게 하시며 그의 얼굴 빛을 변하게 하시고 쫓아보내시오니Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth; Thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.
21.그의 아들들이 존귀하게 되어도 그가 알지 못하며 그들이 비천하게 되어도 그가 깨닫지 못하나이다His sons come to honor, and he knoweth it not; And they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.
22.다만 그의 살이 아프고 그의 영혼이 애곡할 뿐이니이다But his flesh upon him hath pain, And his soul within him mourneth.
