1.그 후에 욥이 입을 열어 자기의 생일을 저주하니라After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day.
2.욥이 입을 열어 이르되And Job answered and said:
3.내가 난 날이 멸망하였더라면, 사내 아이를 배었다 하던 그 밤도 그러하였더라면,Let the day perish wherein I was born, And the night which said, There is a man-child conceived.
4.그 날이 캄캄하였더라면, 하나님이 위에서 돌아보지 않으셨더라면, 빛도 그 날을 비추지 않았더라면,Let that day be darkness; Let not God from above seek for it, Neither let the light shine upon it.
5.어둠과 죽음의 그늘이 그 날을 자기의 것이라 주장하였더라면, 구름이 그 위에 덮였더라면, 흑암이 그 날을 덮었더라면,Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it for their own; Let a cloud dwell upon it; Let all that maketh black the day terrify it.
6.그 밤이 캄캄한 어둠에 잡혔더라면, 해의 날 수와 달의 수에 들지 않았더라면,As for that night, let thick darkness seize upon it: Let it not rejoice among the days of the year; Let it not come into the number of the months.
7.그 밤에 자식을 배지 못하였더라면, 그 밤에 즐거운 소리가 나지 않았더라면,Lo, let that night be barren; Let no joyful voice come therein.
8.날을 저주하는 자들 곧 리워야단을 격동시키기에 익숙한 자들이 그 밤을 저주하였더라면,Let them curse it that curse the day, Who are ready to rouse up leviathan.
9.그 밤에 새벽 별들이 어두웠더라면, 그 밤이 광명을 바랄지라도 얻지 못하며 동틈을 보지 못하였더라면 좋았을 것을,Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark: Let it look for light, but have none; Neither let it behold the eyelids of the morning:
10.이는 내 모태의 문을 닫지 아니하여 내 눈으로 환난을 보게 하였음이로구나Because it shut not up the doors of my mother's womb, Nor hid trouble from mine eyes.
11.어찌하여 내가 태에서 죽어 나오지 아니하였던가 어찌하여 내 어머니가 해산할 때에 내가 숨지지 아니하였던가Why died I not from the womb? Why did I not give up the ghost when my mother bare me?
12.어찌하여 무릎이 나를 받았던가 어찌하여 내가 젖을 빨았던가Why did the knees receive me? Or why the breast, that I should suck?
13.그렇지 아니하였던들 이제는 내가 평안히 누워서 자고 쉬었을 것이니For now should I have lain down and been quiet; I should have slept; then had I been at rest,
14.자기를 위하여 폐허를 일으킨 세상 임금들과 모사들과 함께 있었을 것이요With kings and counsellors of the earth, Who built up waste places for themselves;
15.혹시 금을 가지며 은으로 집을 채운 고관들과 함께 있었을 것이며Or with princes that had gold, Who filled their houses with silver:
16.또는 낙태되어 땅에 묻힌 아이처럼 나는 존재하지 않았겠고 빛을 보지 못한 아이들 같았을 것이라Or as a hidden untimely birth I had not been, As infants that never saw light.
17.거기서는 악한 자가 소요를 그치며 거기서는 피곤한 자가 쉼을 얻으며There the wicked cease from troubling; And there the weary are at rest.
18.거기서는 갇힌 자가 다 함께 평안히 있어 감독자의 호통 소리를 듣지 아니하며There the prisoners are at ease together; They hear not the voice of the taskmaster.
19.거기서는 작은 자와 큰 자가 함께 있고 종이 상전에게서 놓이느니라The small and the great are there: And the servant is free from his master.
20.어찌하여 고난 당하는 자에게 빛을 주셨으며 마음이 아픈 자에게 생명을 주셨는고Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, And life unto the bitter in soul;
21.이러한 자는 죽기를 바라도 오지 아니하니 땅을 파고 숨긴 보배를 찾음보다 죽음을 구하는 것을 더하다가Who long for death, but it cometh not, And dig for it more than for hid treasures;
22.무덤을 찾아 얻으면 심히 기뻐하고 즐거워하나니Who rejoice exceedingly, And are glad, when they can find the grave?
23.하나님에게 둘러 싸여 길이 아득한 사람에게 어찌하여 빛을 주셨는고Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, And whom God hath hedged in?
24.나는 음식 앞에서도 탄식이 나며 내가 앓는 소리는 물이 쏟아지는 소리 같구나For my sighing cometh before I eat, And my groanings are poured out like water.
25.내가 두려워하는 그것이 내게 임하고 내가 무서워하는 그것이 내 몸에 미쳤구나For the thing which I fear cometh upon me, And that which I am afraid of cometh unto me.
26.나에게는 평온도 없고 안일도 없고 휴식도 없고 다만 불안만이 있구나I am not at ease, neither am I quiet, neither have I rest; But trouble cometh.
