1.데만 사람 엘리바스가 대답하여 이르되Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,
2.누가 네게 말하면 네가 싫증을 내겠느냐, 누가 참고 말하지 아니하겠느냐If one assay to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved? But who can withhold himself from speaking?
3.보라 전에 네가 여러 사람을 훈계하였고 손이 늘어진 자를 강하게 하였고Behold, thou hast instructed many, And thou hast strengthened the weak hands.
4.넘어지는 자를 말로 붙들어 주었고 무릎이 약한 자를 강하게 하였거늘Thy words have upholden him that was falling, And thou hast made firm the feeble knees.
5.이제 이 일이 네게 이르매 네가 힘들어 하고 이 일이 네게 닥치매 네가 놀라는구나But now it is come unto thee, and thou faintest; It toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.
6.네 경외함이 네 자랑이 아니냐 네 소망이 네 온전한 길이 아니냐Is not thy fear of God thy confidence, And the integrity of thy ways thy hope?
7.생각하여 보라 죄 없이 망한 자가 누구인가 정직한 자의 끊어짐이 어디 있는가Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? Or where were the upright cut off?
8.내가 보건대 악을 밭 갈고 독을 뿌리는 자는 그대로 거두나니According as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, And sow trouble, reap the same.
9.다 하나님의 입 기운에 멸망하고 그의 콧김에 사라지느니라By the breath of God they perish, And by the blast of his anger are they consumed.
10.사자의 우는 소리와 젊은 사자의 소리가 그치고 어린 사자의 이가 부러지며The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, And the teeth of the young lions, are broken.
11.사자는 사냥한 것이 없어 죽어 가고 암사자의 새끼는 흩어지느니라The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, And the whelps of the lioness are scattered abroad.
12.어떤 말씀이 내게 가만히 이르고 그 가느다란 소리가 내 귀에 들렸었나니Now a thing was secretly brought to me, And mine ear received a whisper thereof.
13.사람이 깊이 잠들 즈음 내가 그 밤에 본 환상으로 말미암아 생각이 번거로울 때에In thoughts from the visions of the night, When deep sleep falleth on men,
14.두려움과 떨림이 내게 이르러서 모든 뼈마디가 흔들렸느니라Fear came upon me, and trembling, Which made all my bones to shake.
15.그 때에 영이 내 앞으로 지나매 내 몸에 털이 주뼛하였느니라Then a spirit passed before my face; The hair of my flesh stood up.
16.그 영이 서 있는데 나는 그 형상을 알아보지는 못하여도 오직 한 형상이 내 눈 앞에 있었느니라 그 때에 내가 조용한 중에 한 목소리를 들으니It stood still, but I could not discern the appearance thereof; A form was before mine eyes: There was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,
17.사람이 어찌 하나님보다 의롭겠느냐 사람이 어찌 그 창조하신 이보다 깨끗하겠느냐Shall mortal man be more just than God? Shall a man be more pure than his Maker?
18.하나님은 그의 종이라도 그대로 믿지 아니하시며 그의 천사라도 미련하다 하시나니Behold, he putteth no trust in his servants; And his angels he chargeth with folly:
19.하물며 흙 집에 살며 티끌로 터를 삼고 하루살이 앞에서라도 무너질 자이겠느냐How much more them that dwell in houses of clay, Whose foundation is in the dust, Who are crushed before the moth!
20.아침과 저녁 사이에 부스러져 가루가 되며 영원히 사라지되 기억하는 자가 없으리라Betwixt morning and evening they are destroyed: They perish for ever without any regarding it.
21.장막 줄이 그들에게서 뽑히지 아니하겠느냐 그들은 지혜가 없이 죽느니라Is not their tent-cord plucked up within them? They die, and that without wisdom.
