1.모세의 장인이며 미디안 제사장인 이드로가 하나님이 모세에게와 자기 백성 이스라엘에게 하신 일 곧 여호와께서 이스라엘을 애굽에서 인도하여 내신 모든 일을 들으니라Now Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, how that Jehovah had brought Israel out of Egypt.
2.모세의 장인 이드로가 모세가 돌려 보냈던 그의 아내 십보라와And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her away,
3.그의 두 아들을 데리고 왔으니 그 하나의 이름은 게르솜이라 이는 모세가 이르기를 내가 이방에서 나그네가 되었다 함이요and her two sons; of whom the name of the one was Gershom; for he said, I have been a sojourner in a foreign land:
4.하나의 이름은 엘리에셀이라 이는 내 아버지의 하나님이 나를 도우사 바로의 칼에서 구원하셨다 함이더라and the name of the other was Eliezer; for he said, The God of my father was my help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh.
5.모세의 장인 이드로가 모세의 아들들과 그의 아내와 더불어 광야에 들어와 모세에게 이르니 곧 모세가 하나님의 산에 진 친 곳이라And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness where he was encamped, at the mount of God:
6.그가 모세에게 말을 전하되 네 장인 나 이드로가 네 아내와 그와 함께 한 그의 두 아들과 더불어 네게 왔노라and he said unto Moses, I, thy father-in-law Jethro, am come unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.
7.모세가 나가서 그의 장인을 맞아 절하고 그에게 입 맞추고 그들이 서로 문안하고 함께 장막에 들어가서And Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.
8.모세가 여호와께서 이스라엘을 위하여 바로와 애굽 사람에게 행하신 모든 일과 길에서 그들이 당한 모든 고난과 여호와께서 그들을 구원하신 일을 다 그 장인에게 말하매And Moses told his father-in-law all that Jehovah had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how Jehovah delivered them.
9.이드로가 여호와께서 이스라엘에게 큰 은혜를 베푸사 애굽 사람의 손에서 구원하심을 기뻐하여And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which Jehovah had done to Israel, in that he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians.
10.이드로가 이르되 여호와를 찬송하리로다 너희를 애굽 사람의 손에서와 바로의 손에서 건져내시고 백성을 애굽 사람의 손 아래에서 건지셨도다And Jethro said, Blessed be Jehovah, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh; who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.
11.이제 내가 알았도다 여호와는 모든 신보다 크시므로 이스라엘에게 교만하게 행하는 그들을 이기셨도다 하고Now I know that Jehovah is greater than all gods; yea, in the thing wherein they dealt proudly against them.
12.모세의 장인 이드로가 번제물과 희생제물들을 하나님께 가져오매 아론과 이스라엘 모든 장로가 와서 모세의 장인과 함께 하나님 앞에서 떡을 먹으니라And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took a burnt-offering and sacrifices for God: and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father-in-law before God.
13.이튿날 모세가 백성을 재판하느라고 앉아 있고 백성은 아침부터 저녁까지 모세 곁에 서 있는지라And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood about Moses from the morning unto the evening.
14.모세의 장인이 모세가 백성에게 행하는 모든 일을 보고 이르되 네가 이 백성에게 행하는 이 일이 어찌 됨이냐 어찌하여 네가 홀로 앉아 있고 백성은 아침부터 저녁까지 네 곁에 서 있느냐And when Moses' father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand about thee from morning unto even?
15.모세가 그의 장인에게 대답하되 백성이 하나님께 물으려고 내게로 옴이라And Moses said unto his father-in-law, Because the people come unto me to inquire of God:
16.그들이 일이 있으면 내게로 오나니 내가 그 양쪽을 재판하여 하나님의 율례와 법도를 알게 하나이다when they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between a man and his neighbor, and I make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.
17.모세의 장인이 그에게 이르되 네가 하는 것이 옳지 못하도다And Moses' father-in-law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.
18.너와 또 너와 함께 한 이 백성이 필경 기력이 쇠하리니 이 일이 네게 너무 중함이라 네가 혼자 할 수 없으리라Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for the thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.
19.이제 내 말을 들으라 내가 네게 방침을 가르치리니 하나님이 너와 함께 계실지로다 너는 하나님 앞에서 그 백성을 위하여 그 사건들을 하나님께 가져오며Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God be with thee: be thou for the people to Godward, and bring thou the causes unto God:
20.그들에게 율례와 법도를 가르쳐서 마땅히 갈 길과 할 일을 그들에게 보이고and thou shalt teach them the statutes and the laws, and shalt show them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.
21.너는 또 온 백성 가운데서 능력 있는 사람들 곧 하나님을 두려워하며 진실하며 불의한 이익을 미워하는 자를 살펴서 백성 위에 세워 천부장과 백부장과 오십부장과 십부장을 삼아Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:
22.그들이 때를 따라 백성을 재판하게 하라 큰 일은 모두 네게 가져갈 것이요 작은 일은 모두 그들이 스스로 재판할 것이니 그리하면 그들이 너와 함께 담당할 것인즉 일이 네게 쉬우리라and let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge themselves: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.
23.네가 만일 이 일을 하고 하나님께서도 네게 허락하시면 네가 이 일을 감당하고 이 모든 백성도 자기 곳으로 평안히 가리라If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people also shall go to their place in peace.
24.이에 모세가 자기 장인의 말을 듣고 그 모든 말대로 하여So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said.
25.모세가 이스라엘 무리 중에서 능력 있는 사람들을 택하여 그들을 백성의 우두머리 곧 천부장과 백부장과 오십부장과 십부장을 삼으매And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
26.그들이 때를 따라 백성을 재판하되 어려운 일은 모세에게 가져오고 모든 작은 일은 스스로 재판하더라And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.
27.모세가 그의 장인을 보내니 그가 자기 땅으로 가니라And Moses let his father-in-law depart; and he went his way into his own land.
