1.이것도 솔로몬의 잠언이요 유다 왕 히스기야의 신하들이 편집한 것이니라These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.
2.일을 숨기는 것은 하나님의 영화요 일을 살피는 것은 왕의 영화니라It is the glory of God to conceal a thing; But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.
3.하늘의 높음과 땅의 깊음 같이 왕의 마음은 헤아릴 수 없느니라As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth, So the heart of kings is unsearchable.
4.은에서 찌꺼기를 제하라 그리하면 장색의 쓸 만한 그릇이 나올 것이요Take away the dross from the silver, And there cometh forth a vessel for the refiner:
5.왕 앞에서 악한 자를 제하라 그리하면 그의 왕위가 의로 말미암아 견고히 서리라Take away the wicked from before the king, And his throne shall be established in righteousness.
6.왕 앞에서 스스로 높은 체하지 말며 대인들의 자리에 서지 말라Put not thyself forward in the presence of the king, And stand not in the place of great men:
7.이는 사람이 네게 이리로 올라오라고 말하는 것이 네 눈에 보이는 귀인 앞에서 저리로 내려가라고 말하는 것보다 나음이니라For better is it that it be said unto thee, Come up hither, Than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince, Whom thine eyes have seen.
8.너는 서둘러 나가서 다투지 말라 마침내 네가 이웃에게서 욕을 보게 될 때에 네가 어찌할 줄을 알지 못할까 두려우니라Go not forth hastily to strive, Lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, When thy neighbor hath put thee to shame.
9.너는 이웃과 다투거든 변론만 하고 남의 은밀한 일은 누설하지 말라Debate thy cause with thy neighbor himself, And disclose not the secret of another;
10.듣는 자가 너를 꾸짖을 터이요 또 네게 대한 악평이 네게서 떠나지 아니할까 두려우니라Lest he that heareth it revile thee, And thine infamy turn not away.
11.경우에 합당한 말은 아로새긴 은 쟁반에 금 사과니라A word fitly spoken Is like apples of gold in network of silver.
12.슬기로운 자의 책망은 청종하는 귀에 금 고리와 정금 장식이니라As an ear-ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, So is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.
13.충성된 사자는 그를 보낸 이에게 마치 추수하는 날에 얼음 냉수 같아서 능히 그 주인의 마음을 시원하게 하느니라As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, So is a faithful messenger to them that send him; For he refresheth the soul of his masters.
14.선물한다고 거짓 자랑하는 자는 비 없는 구름과 바람 같으니라As clouds and wind without rain, So is he that boasteth himself of his gifts falsely.
15.오래 참으면 관원도 설득할 수 있나니 부드러운 혀는 뼈를 꺾느니라By long forbearing is a ruler persuaded, And a soft tongue breaketh the bone.
16.너는 꿀을 보거든 족하리만큼 먹으라 과식함으로 토할까 두려우니라Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, Lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.
17.너는 이웃집에 자주 다니지 말라 그가 너를 싫어하며 미워할까 두려우니라Let thy foot be seldom in thy neighbor's house, Lest he be weary of thee, and hate thee.
18.자기의 이웃을 쳐서 거짓 증거하는 사람은 방망이요 칼이요 뾰족한 화살이니라A man that beareth false witness against his neighbor Is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.
19.환난 날에 진실하지 못한 자를 의뢰하는 것은 부러진 이와 위골된 발 같으니라Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble Is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.
20.마음이 상한 자에게 노래하는 것은 추운 날에 옷을 벗음 같고 소다 위에 식초를 부음 같으니라As one that taketh off a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon soda, So is he that singeth songs to a heavy heart.
21.네 원수가 배고파하거든 음식을 먹이고 목말라하거든 물을 마시게 하라If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:
22.그리 하는 것은 핀 숯을 그의 머리에 놓는 것과 일반이요 여호와께서 네게 갚아 주시리라For thou wilt heap coals of fire upon his head, And Jehovah will reward thee.
23.북풍이 비를 일으킴 같이 참소하는 혀는 사람의 얼굴에 분을 일으키느니라The north wind bringeth forth rain: So doth a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.
24.다투는 여인과 함께 큰 집에서 사는 것보다 움막에서 혼자 사는 것이 나으니라It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, Than with a contentious woman in a wide house.
25.먼 땅에서 오는 좋은 기별은 목마른 사람에게 냉수와 같으니라As cold waters to a thirsty soul, So is good news from a far country.
26.의인이 악인 앞에 굴복하는 것은 우물이 흐려짐과 샘이 더러워짐과 같으니라As a troubled fountain, and a corrupted spring, So is a righteous man that giveth way before the wicked.
27.꿀을 많이 먹는 것이 좋지 못하고 자기의 영예를 구하는 것이 헛되니라It is not good to eat much honey: So for men to search out their own glory is grievous.
28.자기의 마음을 제어하지 아니하는 자는 성읍이 무너지고 성벽이 없는 것과 같으니라He whose spirit is without restraint Is like a city that is broken down and without walls.
