1.다윗의 아들 예루살렘 왕 전도자의 말씀이라The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
2.전도자가 이르되 헛되고 헛되며 헛되고 헛되니 모든 것이 헛되도다Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher; vanity of vanities, all is vanity.
3.해 아래에서 수고하는 모든 수고가 사람에게 무엇이 유익한가What profit hath man of all his labor wherein he laboreth under the sun?
4.한 세대는 가고 한 세대는 오되 땅은 영원히 있도다One generation goeth, and another generation cometh; but the earth abideth for ever.
5.해는 뜨고 해는 지되 그 떴던 곳으로 빨리 돌아가고The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to its place where it ariseth.
6.바람은 남으로 불다가 북으로 돌아가며 이리 돌며 저리 돌아 바람은 그 불던 곳으로 돌아가고The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it turneth about continually in its course, and the wind returneth again to its circuits.
7.모든 강물은 다 바다로 흐르되 바다를 채우지 못하며 강물은 어느 곳으로 흐르든지 그리로 연하여 흐르느니라All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full; unto the place whither the rivers go, thither they go again.
8.모든 만물이 피곤하다는 것을 사람이 말로 다 말할 수는 없나니 눈은 보아도 족함이 없고 귀는 들어도 가득 차지 아니하도다All things are full of weariness; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
9.이미 있던 것이 후에 다시 있겠고 이미 한 일을 후에 다시 할지라 해 아래에는 새 것이 없나니That which hath been is that which shall be; and that which hath been done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
10.무엇을 가리켜 이르기를 보라 이것이 새 것이라 할 것이 있으랴 우리가 있기 오래 전 세대들에도 이미 있었느니라Is there a thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been long ago, in the ages which were before us.
11.이전 세대들이 기억됨이 없으니 장래 세대도 그 후 세대들과 함께 기억됨이 없으리라There is no remembrance of the former generations; neither shall there be any remembrance of the latter generations that are to come, among those that shall come after.
12.나 전도자는 예루살렘에서 이스라엘 왕이 되어I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
13.마음을 다하며 지혜를 써서 하늘 아래에서 행하는 모든 일을 연구하며 살핀즉 이는 괴로운 것이니 하나님이 인생들에게 주사 수고하게 하신 것이라And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven: it is a sore travail that God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised therewith.
14.내가 해 아래에서 행하는 모든 일을 보았노라 보라 모두 다 헛되어 바람을 잡으려는 것이로다I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.
15.구부러진 것도 곧게 할 수 없고 모자란 것도 셀 수 없도다That which is crooked cannot be made straight; and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.
16.내가 내 마음 속으로 말하여 이르기를 보라 내가 크게 되고 지혜를 더 많이 얻었으므로 나보다 먼저 예루살렘에 있던 모든 사람들보다 낫다 하였나니 내 마음이 지혜와 지식을 많이 만나 보았음이로다I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I have gotten me great wisdom above all that were before me in Jerusalem; yea, my heart hath had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
17.내가 다시 지혜를 알고자 하며 미친 것들과 미련한 것들을 알고자 하여 마음을 썼으나 이것도 바람을 잡으려는 것인 줄을 깨달았도다And I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also was a striving after wind.
18.지혜가 많으면 번뇌도 많으니 지식을 더하는 자는 근심을 더하느니라For in much wisdom is much grief; and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
