1.죽은 파리들이 향기름을 악취가 나게 만드는 것 같이 적은 우매가 지혜와 존귀를 난처하게 만드느니라Dead flies cause the oil of the perfumer to send forth an evil odor; so doth a little folly outweigh wisdom and honor.
2.지혜자의 마음은 오른쪽에 있고 우매자의 마음은 왼쪽에 있느니라A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart at his left.
3.우매한 자는 길을 갈 때에도 지혜가 부족하여 각 사람에게 자기가 우매함을 말하느니라Yea also, when the fool walketh by the way, his understanding faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.
4.주권자가 네게 분을 일으키거든 너는 네 자리를 떠나지 말라 공손함이 큰 허물을 용서 받게 하느니라If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for gentleness allayeth great offences.
5.내가 해 아래에서 한 가지 재난을 보았노니 곧 주권자에게서 나오는 허물이라There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as it were an error which proceedeth from the ruler:
6.우매한 자가 크게 높은 지위들을 얻고 부자들이 낮은 지위에 앉는도다folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in a low place.
7.또 내가 보았노니 종들은 말을 타고 고관들은 종들처럼 땅에 걸어 다니는도다I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking like servants upon the earth.
8.함정을 파는 자는 거기에 빠질 것이요 담을 허는 자는 뱀에게 물리리라He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh through a wall, a serpent shall bite him.
9.돌들을 떠내는 자는 그로 말미암아 상할 것이요 나무들을 쪼개는 자는 그로 말미암아 위험을 당하리라Whoso heweth out stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood is endangered thereby.
10.철 연장이 무디어졌는데도 날을 갈지 아니하면 힘이 더 드느니라 오직 지혜는 성공하기에 유익하니라If the iron be blunt, and one do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.
11.주술을 베풀기 전에 뱀에게 물렸으면 술객은 소용이 없느니라If the serpent bite before it is charmed, then is there no advantage in the charmer.
12.지혜자의 입의 말들은 은혜로우나 우매자의 입술들은 자기를 삼키나니The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.
13.그의 입의 말들의 시작은 우매요 그의 입의 결말들은 심히 미친 것이니라The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness; and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.
14.우매한 자는 말을 많이 하거니와 사람은 장래 일을 알지 못하나니 나중에 일어날 일을 누가 그에게 알리리요A fool also multiplieth words: yet man knoweth not what shall be; and that which shall be after him, who can tell him?
15.우매한 자들의 수고는 자신을 피곤하게 할 뿐이라 그들은 성읍에 들어갈 줄도 알지 못함이니라The labor of fools wearieth every one of them; for he knoweth not how to go to the city.
16.왕은 어리고 대신들은 아침부터 잔치하는 나라여 네게 화가 있도다Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!
17.왕은 귀족들의 아들이요 대신들은 취하지 아니하고 기력을 보하려고 정한 때에 먹는 나라여 네게 복이 있도다Happy art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
18.게으른즉 서까래가 내려앉고 손을 놓은즉 집이 새느니라By slothfulness the roof sinketh in; and through idleness of the hands the house leaketh.
19.잔치는 희락을 위하여 베푸는 것이요 포도주는 생명을 기쁘게 하는 것이나 돈은 범사에 이용되느니라A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh glad the life; and money answereth all things.
20.심중에라도 왕을 저주하지 말며 침실에서라도 부자를 저주하지 말라 공중의 새가 그 소리를 전하고 날짐승이 그 일을 전파할 것임이니라Revile not the king, no, not in thy thought; and revile not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the heavens shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
