Ephesians 2:8-10 — Grace, Faith, and Good Works
Salvation is God's gift received through faith, not human achievement; believers are then God's workmanship, created in Christ for the good works He prepared.

这段经文的意思
Verses 8-9 form a tightly linked sentence: salvation is by grace, received through faith, and is not from the believers themselves nor from works, so that no one may boast. The construction 'that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God' identifies the entire act of being saved — by grace through faith — as the gift, not merely faith itself. Because human boasting is excluded, the ground of salvation is firmly placed outside any human contribution.
Verse 10 supplies the positive purpose behind this exclusion of boasting. Believers are 'his workmanship' — the Greek poiēma indicates something made or crafted — 'created in Christ Jesus for good works.' These works are not the cause but the goal and accompaniment of salvation; they are 'works which God afore prepared' (proētoimasen) that we should walk in them. The same God who justifies also designs the life that follows.
Together the three verses distinguish two relations to works: works do not justify (v. 9), but justified persons are recreated for works (v. 10). Faith is the instrumental means, grace is the efficient cause, and God's prior preparation is the framework within which the new life is to be lived.
背景
Verses 5-7 supply the preceding context: God made believers alive together with Christ, raised them, and seated them in heavenly places 'that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace.' Ephesians 2:8-10 thus explains the means (grace through faith) and the purpose (good works) of that earlier divine action.
Verses 11-13 redirect the discussion toward Gentile believers: they were once 'separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel,' but are now 'made nigh in the blood of Christ.' Salvation by grace rather than by works of the law undergirds the inclusion of the Gentiles into the one people of God described in verses 14-22.

- Philippians 2:13 Echoes Ephesians 2:10: just as God prepared good works for believers to walk in, He also works in them 'both to will and to work, for his good pleasure.' The energizing of obedience is itself divine.
- Colossians 1:10 Pairs well with the closing clause of Ephesians 2:10: walking worthily of the Lord includes 'bearing fruit in every good work,' matching the 'good works which God afore prepared that we should walk in them.'
- Romans 3:26 Romans 3:26 highlights God as 'just, and the justifier of him that hath faith in Jesus,' matching the exclusion of boasting in Ephesians 2:9. God's justice is upheld precisely because justification is by faith, not works.
常见问题
Is faith itself the gift in Ephesians 2:8?
The verse says 'by grace have ye been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.' The 'that' most naturally refers to the whole act of being saved by grace through faith, not to faith alone. In any case, the passage rules out any human ground for boasting in salvation.
If salvation is not by works, why does verse 10 mention good works?
Verse 9 excludes works as the basis of justification, and verse 10 identifies good works as the purpose and goal of the new creation: 'created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God afore prepared.' Works do not earn salvation; they are the life that follows being saved.
What does 'workmanship' mean in Ephesians 2:10?
The Greek poiēma means something made or crafted. Believers are God's product of new creation in Christ, fashioned to walk in the good works He prepared in advance.
