Why this book was written
Written near the end of the first century to churches likely in Asia Minor, 1 John addresses the threat of schismatic teachers—early proto-Gnostic voices—who denied Christ's incarnation and dismissed the duty of brotherly love. John writes to (1) strengthen believers' assurance of salvation (5:13); (2) defend apostolic truth—that Christ truly came in the flesh, that God is light, and that God is love; and (3) exhort believers to lives that match the gospel—confession of sin, love for one another, and victory over the world.
Structure
- 1:1–2:14Fellowship in the Light: The Word of Life Declared
- 2:15–3:24Walking in Truth: Children, Young Men, Fathers, and the World
- 4:1–4:21Testing the Spirits: God Is Love
- 5:1–5:21Victorious Faith: Assurance and Eternal Life
Major themes
God is Light and Truth
John declares that God is light and in Him there is no darkness (1:5). Believers walk in the light, have fellowship with God and with one another (1:6-7), forming the ethical foundation of the epistle.
Confession and Forgiveness
If we confess our sins, God—who is faithful and just—will forgive and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1:9). Confession restores fellowship rather than producing shame.
Love for One Another
Loving one another is the new commandment and the mark of true discipleship (3:23; 4:7,21). Whoever does not love remains in death (3:14), because love originates from God (4:7-8).
Children of God versus the World
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God (5:1) and overcomes the world (5:4). Yet the world with its desires passes away, while the one who does the will of God abides forever (2:15-17).
The Spirit's Witness and Discernment
The Spirit dwells in believers (3:24; 4:13) and enables us to test the spirits (4:1-3). Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God (4:2).
How it points to Christ
1 John reveals Christ in three ways. First, He is the eternal Word of life who became flesh and was manifested to the apostles (1:2; 4:2). Second, He is the propitiation for our sins and our advocate before the Father (2:1-2). Third, He is the life itself that the Father has given to believers—everyone who has the Son has life (5:11-12). Christ is also the embodiment of God's love, defining what love truly is and sending us to love one another as He loved us (3:16; 4:9-11).
Key verses
- 1:7Summarizes the book's twin themes: fellowship in the light and cleansing from sin through the blood of Jesus.
- 2:3–4Knowing God is verified by obedience—truth is visible in how one lives.
- 2:23Denying the Son means forfeiting the Father—the direct rebuttal of those rejecting Christ's incarnation.
- 3:16Christ laid down His life as the definition of love—true love must move to action.
- 4:8The book's most concentrated theological claim: the one who does not love does not know God.
- 4:18Mature love casts out fear, linking the certainty of salvation with perfected love.
- 5:11–12Eternal life is in the Son—the core assurance John writes to confirm.
- 5:13The stated purpose of the letter: that you may know you have eternal life.

Chapter 3
1Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God; and such we are. For this cause the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
2Beloved, now are we children of God, and it is not yet made manifest what we shall be. We know that, if he shall be manifested, we shall be like him; for we shall see him even as he is.
3And every one that hath this hope set on him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
4Every one that doeth sin doeth also lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.
5And ye know that he was manifested to take away sins; and in him is no sin.
6Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither knoweth him.
7My little children, let no man lead you astray: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous:
8he that doeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. To this end was the Son of God manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9Whosoever is begotten of God doeth no sin, because his seed abideth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is begotten of God.
10In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
11For this is the message which ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another:
12not as Cain was of the evil one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his works were evil, and his brother's righteous.
13Marvel not, brethren, if the world hateth you.
14We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not abideth in death.
15Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
16Hereby know we love, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
17But whoso hath the world's goods, and beholdeth his brother in need, and shutteth up his compassion from him, how doth the love of God abide in him?
18My Little children, let us not love in word, neither with the tongue; but in deed and truth.
19Hereby shall we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our heart before him:
20because if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
21Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, we have boldness toward God;
22and whatsoever we ask we receive of him, because we keep his commandments and do the things that are pleasing in his sight.
23And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, even as he gave us commandment.
24And he that keepeth his commandments abideth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he gave us.
