Why this book was written
Written after Paul's first missionary journey (c. AD 48–55), Galatians addresses the crisis when Judaizing teachers entered the Galatian churches insisting Gentile believers must be circumcised and keep Mosaic law to be saved (cf. Acts 15). Paul writes with apostolic urgency for three reasons: (1) to defend the purity of the gospel—justification is by grace through faith, never by human works; (2) to reaffirm his apostolic authority—his gospel was received by revelation from Christ, not from human tradition; (3) to call believers to stand firm in the freedom Christ purchased and to walk by the Spirit rather than be enslaved again by a yoke of law.
Structure
- 1–2The Origin of the Gospel and Paul's Apostolic Defense
- 3–4Justification by Faith and the Role of the Law
- 5True Freedom in Christ
- 6Walking by the Spirit and the New Creation in Christ
Major themes
Freedom by Faith Alone
Paul emphasizes that justification is by faith in Christ alone, not by works of the law (Gal 2:16; 3:11). This freedom is liberation from sin and the law's curse (3:13).
Law vs. Grace
The law was a guardian leading to Christ (3:24); now grace has come, and believers are no longer under its bondage (5:18). They live by the Spirit, not by legal rules.
The Spirit and Spiritual Life
Believers received the Spirit by faith (3:2); the Spirit produces fruit such as love, joy, and peace (5:22-23), in contrast to the works of the flesh (5:19-21).
Oneness in Christ
In Christ Jesus there is neither Jew nor Greek, and the one who serves Him is free (3:28; 5:1). The church is one new humanity.
The Cross and the New Creation
Paul boasts only in the cross, by which the world is crucified to him (6:14); neither circumcision nor uncircumcision matters, but becoming a new creation (6:15).
Holding Truth and Living in Love
Believers must stand firm for the gospel truth (1:9; 5:1) and also love one another, bearing each other's burdens (6:2), restoring the fallen with gentleness (6:1).
How it points to Christ
Galatians reveals Christ as the sole foundation of salvation. His cross releases believers from the law's curse (3:13), brings the promised Spirit (3:14), and makes all people Abraham's offspring in Him (3:29). Christ is both the proclaimed center (1:16) and the source of new life (2:20) — 'I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.'
Key verses
- 1:8–9Paul issues one of the severest warnings in the NT: anyone preaching another gospel is to be accursed, setting the tone for the entire defense of the true gospel.
- 2:16'Justified by faith in Christ, not by works of the law'—the Reformation's rallying verse, articulating the very heart of justification.
- 2:20Paul's personal confession of faith: Christ lives in him, and his life is lived by faith in the Son of God—uniting justification and sanctification.
- 3:24–25The law is a guardian/tutor leading us to Christ; it clarifies that the law's role is temporary and pedagogical, not the means of justification.
- 3:29'If you belong to Christ, you are Abraham's seed'—believers inherit Abraham's promised blessing through the new covenant.
- 4:6–7God sends the Spirit of His Son so we cry 'Abba' and become heirs—showing the fruit of justification is adoption and the Spirit's indwelling.
- 5:1'Christ has set us free; stand firm and do not be burdened again by a yoke of slavery'—the central verse on Christian freedom.
- 5:22–23The fruit of the Spirit is the righteousness the law requires manifested in believers' lives, answering the charge that abandoning law abandons righteousness.

Chapter 3
1O foolish Galatians, who did bewitch you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was openly set forth crucified?
2This only would I learn from you. Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
3Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now perfected in the flesh?
4Did ye suffer so many things in vain? if it be indeed in vain.
5He therefore that supplieth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
6Even as Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned unto him for righteousness.
7Know therefore that they that are of faith, the same are sons of Abraham.
8And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all the nations be blessed.
9So then they that are of faith are blessed with the faithful Abraham.
10For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one who continueth not in all things that are written in the book of the law, to do them.
11Now that no man is justified by the law before God, is evident: for, The righteous shall live by faith;
12and the law is not of faith; but, He that doeth them shall live in them.
13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us; for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
14that upon the Gentiles might come the blessing of Abraham in Christ Jesus; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
15Brethren, I speak after the manner of men: Though it be but a man's covenant, yet when it hath been confirmed, no one maketh it void, or addeth thereto.
16Now to Abraham were the promises spoken, and to his seed. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
17Now this I say: A covenant confirmed beforehand by God, the law, which came four hundred and thirty years after, doth not disannul, so as to make the promise of none effect.
18For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no more of promise: but God hath granted it to Abraham by promise.
19What then is the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise hath been made; and it was ordained through angels by the hand of a mediator.
20Now a mediator is not a mediator of one; but God is one.
21Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could make alive, verily righteousness would have been of the law.
22But the scriptures shut up all things under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
23But before faith came, we were kept in ward under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
24So that the law is become our tutor to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25But now that faith is come, we are no longer under a tutor.
26For ye are all sons of God, through faith, in Christ Jesus.
27For as many of you as were baptized into Christ did put on Christ.
28There can be neither Jew nor Greek, there can be neither bond nor free, there can be no male and female; for ye all are one man in Christ Jesus.
29And if ye are Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, heirs according to promise.
