Josiah was the son of King Amon of Judah, and he ascended to the throne at a young age. Scripture notes his heart to seek God from his youth, a quality rare among the kings of Israel and Judah. When he began to reign, the nation was steeped in idolatry and foreign religious practices, yet Josiah chose to walk in obedience to the Lord, laying the foundation for the sweeping reforms to come. In the twelfth year of his reign, an event reshaped the spiritual direction of the entire nation. Hilkiah the high priest found the Book of the Law in the house of Jehovah and delivered it to Shaphan the scribe, who read it. This scroll was most likely the Law of Moses, containing the covenant (berit) that God had established with Israel at Sinai. When Shaphan read the words to the king, Josiah tore his clothes, deeply moved by how far the people had wandered from God's statutes. He immediately sent his officials to inquire of the Lord and sent messengers to gather all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem to the Temple. There the king publicly read the words of the Book of the Law, and the people stood together within the covenant, pledging once again to follow God's commandments. This was a public, national covenant renewal rooted in the very framework of the Mosaic covenant established at Sinai. Following the renewal, Josiah carried out a vigorous reform: he removed the idols and foreign altars, abolished the worship of Molech and other pagan practices, purified the Temple, and commanded the people to keep the Passover. Scripture records that no king before or after him turned to the Lord with all his heart, all his soul, and all his might as he did. Josiah's life stands as a lasting model, showing that even in spiritually dark times, one person who sincerely seeks God can bring true revival to a nation.
