Priscilla, together with her husband Aquila, were Jews originally from Pontus. According to the book of Acts, when Claudius commanded all the Jews to depart from Rome, Priscilla and Aquila came from Italy to Corinth. It was there that Paul, sharing the same trade of tentmaking, joined them (Acts 18:2-3). Priscilla's name is mentioned in several New Testament passages, often listed before that of Aquila, an unusual practice for the time that may reflect her significant role in both the household and the ministry of the gospel. Priscilla and Aquila later traveled with Paul and ministered in various places. They hosted a church in their home in Ephesus (1 Corinthians 16:19) and at one point risked their own lives for Paul (Romans 16:3-4). While in Ephesus, a Jewish teacher named Apollos arrived after having been instructed in the way of the Lord and speaking with great enthusiasm. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him speaking boldly in the synagogue, they took him aside and expounded to him the way of God more accurately (Acts 18:26). This account reveals that Priscilla possessed deep knowledge of Scripture and a gift for teaching, enabling her to disciple fellow workers with gentleness and precision. The story of Priscilla illustrates the model of husband and wife ministering together in the early Church. Her home, together with Aquila's, served as a center for church gatherings and hospitality, and she herself served the kingdom of God through teaching and encouragement. Paul greets this couple in several of his letters, calling them his fellow workers in Christ Jesus, showing that Priscilla played an indispensable role in the establishment of the apostolic Church and stands as a faithful example of women laboring alongside their husbands in the work of discipleship and gospel ministry.
