1.现在,蛇比上帝所造的所有野兽都更狡猾,它对女人说:“神真的说:你们不可吃园中任何树上的果子吗?”Now the serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild beasts that the ETERNAL God had made. It said to the woman, “Did God really say: You shall not eat of any tree of the garden?”
2.女人对蛇说:“我们可以吃园子里其他树上的果子。The woman replied to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the other trees of the garden.
3.惟独关于园子中间树上的果子,神说:‘你们不可吃,也不可摸,否则你们就必死。’”It is only about fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden that God said: ‘You shall not eat of it or touch it, lest you die.’”
4.蛇对女人说:“你们不一定会死,And the serpent said to the woman, “You are not going to die,
5.但神知道你们吃了它,眼睛就会睁开,你们就会像神一样能辨别善恶。but God knows that as soon as you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like divine beings who know good and bad.”
6.当女人看见那棵树的果子好吃又悦目,而且是可喜爱的,可以使人有智慧,她就摘了果子吃了。她也给了她的丈夫,丈夫也吃了。When the woman saw that the tree was good for eating and a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable as a source of wisdom, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave some to her husband, and he ate.
7.于是,二人眼睛一旦开启,就知道自己是赤身露体的,于是他们就拿着无花果树的叶子,为自己缝合腰布。Then the eyes of both of them were opened and they perceived that they were naked; and they sewed together fig leaves and made themselves loincloths.
8.他们听见永在的神在凉风时分在园中行走的声音,亚当和他的妻子就藏在园中的树中,躲避永在的神。They heard the sound of the ETERNAL God moving about in the garden at the breezy time of day; and the Human and his wife hid from the ETERNAL God among the trees of the garden.
9.永恒的神呼唤那个人,对他说:“你在哪里?”The ETERNAL God called out to the Human and said to him, “Where are you?”
10.他回答说:“我在园中听见你的声音,就因为我赤身露体,害怕起来,所以我就隐藏起来。”He replied, “I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.”
11.“是谁告诉你你们是赤身露体的?难道你吃了我所吩咐你不准吃的那棵树上的果子吗?”“Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat of the tree from which I had forbidden you to eat?”
12.那人说:“你把这女人放在我旁边,她把树上的果子给我,我就吃了。”The Human said, “The woman You put at my side—she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”
13.永在的神对女人说:“你做了什么?”女人说:“蛇骗了我,我就吃了。”And the ETERNAL God said to the woman, “What is this you have done!” The woman replied, “The serpent duped me, and I ate.”
14.然后永在的神对蛇说:“因为你做了这件事,你将比所有的牲畜和野兽更受诅咒,你必用肚子爬行,并且要吃土,你全生命的日子都这样。Then the ETERNAL God said to the serpent,“Because you did this,More cursed shall you beThan all cattleAnd all the wild beasts:On your belly shall you crawlAnd dirt shall you eatAll the days of your life.
15.我要使你和女人彼此为敌,你的后裔和她的后裔也彼此为敌。女人后裔要伤你的头,你要伤她的后裔的脚跟。I will put enmityBetween you and the woman,And between your offspring and hers;They shall strike at your head,And you shall strike at their heel.”
16.又对女人说:“我会大大增加你的劳苦和你的怀孕之痛,你将在痛苦中生养子女。你将渴慕你的丈夫,你的丈夫将管辖你。”And to the woman [God] said,“I will greatly expandYour toil—and your pregnancies;In hardship shall you bear children.Yet your urge shall be for your husband,And his will shall prevail over yours.”
17.对亚当,神说:“因为你听从妻子的话,吃了我所吩咐你不可吃的树上的果子,地就要被咒诅,因为你;你必终身劳苦,才能从地里得吃的;To Adam [God] said, “Because you did as your wife said and ate of the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’Cursed be the ground because of you;By toil shall you eat of itAll the days of your life:
18.荆棘和蒺藜将会为你长出。你将以田野的草为食;Thorns and thistles shall it sprout for you.But your food shall be the grasses of the field;
19.你必用劳碌得饼吃,直到你归了土,因为你是从土而来的。你为尘土,正如2.7所说;参看那里的第二个脚注。的确,你是尘土,到头来也必归于尘土。By the sweat of your browShall you get bread to eat,Until you return to the ground—For from it you were taken.For dust, as in 2.7; cf. the second note there. you are,And to dust you shall return.”
20.人类命名他的妻子为夏娃,因为她是所有活人的母亲。The Human named his wife Eve,. because she was the mother of all the living..
21.永在的神为亚当和他的妻子用皮子作了衣服,并把他们穿上。And the ETERNAL God made garments of skins for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.
22.永恒的神说:“现在人已经和我们一样,能辨别善恶,恐怕他又伸手摘生命树的果子吃了,就永远活着。”And the ETERNAL God said, “Now that humankind has become like any of us, knowing good and bad, what if one should stretch out a hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever!”
23.于是永在的神把他们赶出伊甸园去耕种土地,即“土”,如2.7;参看那里的第二注,他们就是从这土而来的。So the ETERNAL God banished them from the garden of Eden, to till the humus, lit. “soil,” as in 2.7; cf. the second note there. from which they were taken:
