Why this book was written
Written around AD 95 to the seven churches of Asia Minor and all believers of every era, Revelation addresses churches under Roman persecution and threatened by heresy and compromise. From his exile on Patmos, John writes to comfort suffering saints, warn wayward congregations, unveil Christ's decisive victory and certain return, and call the church to faithful endurance until God's kingdom is fully revealed.
Structure
- 1–3Christ's Vision and the Seven Churches
- 4–5Worship at the Throne and the Seven Seals
- 6–11The Seven Trumpets and the Two Witnesses
- 12–14The Dragon, the Beasts, and the Lamb's War
- 15–19The Seven Bowls and the Fall of Babylon
- 20–22The Millennium, Final Judgment, and the New Creation
Major themes
Christ's Sovereignty and Return
Revelation portrays the exalted Christ (Rev 1), the slain Lamb (Rev 5), and the King of kings returning on a cloud (Rev 19), declaring that God's kingdom will surely come.
Perseverance and Faithful Witness
The seven letters (Rev 2–3) call believers to hold fast truth, overcome trials, and promise the crown of life and hidden manna to the conqueror (Rev 2:7, 2:10, 3:5).
Eschatological Judgment and Salvation
The seals, trumpets, and bowls (Rev 6–16) display God's righteous wrath against evil while preserving His servants; the 144,000 are sealed and the two witnesses are raised (Rev 11).
Cosmic Conflict and Covenant Victory
The dragon, beast, and false prophet (Rev 12–13) war against the Lamb, but the Lamb overcomes them by His blood (Rev 12:11).
The Holy City, New Jerusalem
God's tabernacle is with humanity, the Bride is adorned for her Husband (Rev 19:7–9, 21:2), and all things are made new as God wipes every tear (Rev 21:4–5).
How it points to Christ
At the heart of Revelation stands Jesus Christ — the First and the Last, who died and now lives (Rev 1:17–18). Only the slain Lamb is worthy to open the seven seals and receive power and glory (Rev 5:5–12). He will rule the nations with an iron scepter and be revealed as the glorious King (Rev 19:11–16). He is the source of all light in the new creation — the Lamb is the city's lamp (Rev 21:22–23), and believers overcome only by His blood, word, and testimony.
Key verses
- 1:8Christ declares Himself the Almighty One who was, is, and is to come, anchoring the book's theme of divine sovereignty and eternity.
- 5:5–6The slain Lamb alone is worthy to open the scroll, revealing that redemption and judgment belong to the crucified Christ.
- 12:10–11The dragon is cast down and the saints overcome by the Lamb's blood and their witness—core comfort for the persecuted church.
- 17:14The Lamb will overcome all who war against Him, for He is Lord of lords—sealing history's ultimate outcome.
- 19:11–16Christ rides forth on a white horse with eyes like fire to judge and make war in righteousness.
- 21:1–5A new heaven and new earth with the new Jerusalem descend, and God dwells with His people wiping away every tear—the climax of biblical hope.
- 22:20Jesus personally promises 'I am coming soon,' serving as the book's closing word and the church's enduring hope.
- 2:10The Smyrna church is called to be faithful unto death to receive the crown of life—a promise to suffering believers.

Questions for reflection
- ·In your present circumstances, is Jesus' word to the seven churches — such as Ephesus losing first love, or Laodicea's lukewarmness — speaking also to you?
- ·As you read of the Lamb's victory over evil, are you living today in the certainty that He has already overcome, rather than striving in your own strength?
- ·God promises in the New Jerusalem that 'death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, crying, or pain' (Rev 21:4) — how does this hope become a real comfort in your present trials?
- ·How do Revelation's warnings against worshipping the beast (Rev 14:9–11) lead you to examine the spiritual and practical idols you rely on today?
- ·When the Lord says, 'Surely I am coming soon' (Rev 22:7, 22:20), does it reorder your present routines, values, and priorities?

Chapter 12
1And a great sign was seen in heaven: a woman arrayed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars;
2and she was with child; and she crieth out, travailing in birth, and in pain to be delivered.
3And there was seen another sign in heaven: and behold, a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his heads seven diadems.
4And his tail draweth the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon standeth before the woman that is about to be delivered, that when she is delivered he may devour her child.
5And she was delivered of a son, a man child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and unto his throne.
6And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that there they may nourish her a thousand two hundred and threescore days.
7And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels going forth to war with the dragon; and the dragon warred and his angels;
8And they prevailed not, neither was their place found any more in heaven.
9And the great dragon was cast down, the old serpent, he that is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world; he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were cast down with him.
10And I heard a great voice in heaven, saying, Now is come the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, who accuseth them before our God day and night.
11And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb, and because of the word of their testimony; and they loved not their life even unto death.
12Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe for the earth and for the sea: because the devil is gone down unto you, having great wrath, knowing that he hath but a short time.
13And when the dragon saw that he was cast down to the earth, he persecuted the woman that brought forth the man child.
14And there were given to the woman the two wings of the great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness unto her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.
15And the serpent cast out of his mouth after the woman water as a river, that he might cause her to be carried away by the stream.
16And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth and swallowed up the river which the dragon cast out of his mouth.
17And the dragon waxed wroth with the woman, and went away to make war with the rest of her seed, that keep the commandments of God, and hold the testimony of Jesus:
