인물生平

Elijah spoke for the Lord in the days of King Ahab, prophesied drought, and was sustained through the widow of Zarephath (1 Kgs 17). On Mount Carmel he confronted the prophets of Baal and fire fell from heaven (1 Kgs 18). He heard the 'still small voice' at Horeb (1 Kgs 19) and was taken up in a whirlwind (2 Kgs 2). Jewish tradition expects his return (Mal 4:5–6), and the New Testament sees him as a type of the forerunner (Matt 17).

Frequently Asked Questions

What happened on Mount Carmel?

He challenged the prophets of Baal: their altar received no answer, but when Elijah called on the Lord, fire fell and consumed the offering, and Israel declared, 'The Lord, he is God.'

Why did Elijah not experience death?

According to 2 Kings 2, he was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind with horses and chariots of fire — one of only two figures in the Bible taken without dying (with Enoch).
