Why this book was written
Joshua records Israel's entry into Canaan under Joshua's leadership to assure Israel (likely the post-exilic or struggling community) that the LORD is faithful to His covenant—those who trust and obey will receive His promised inheritance—and to warn that disobedience will forfeit His blessing.
Structure
- 1–5Entering the Promised Land
- 6–12Conquering Canaan
- 13–22Dividing and Settling the Land
- 23–24Joshua's Farewell and Covenant Renewal
Major themes
Faithfulness and Victory
God promised to give Canaan to Israel and called them to fight by faith under Joshua's leadership. God proved faithful, granting victory at Jericho, Ai, and beyond (Josh 1:3; ch. 6; 21:43–45).
Obedience and Holiness
Israel's victories depended on full obedience—circling Jericho, dealing decisively with Achan's sin, and renewing the covenant (Josh 6; ch. 7; 8:30–35).
God's Presence and Sovereignty
Facing mighty Canaanites, Joshua is assured, 'the LORD your God is with you' (Josh 1:5, 9). God sovereignly chose Israel, executed judgment, and apportioned the land.
Land and Rest
God gave Canaan as an inheritance to the twelve tribes, picturing His promised rest—a foreshadowing of the ultimate rest He prepared for His people (Josh 11:23; 21:43–45; Heb 4).
Covenant Renewal and Consecration
Joshua renewed the law at Mount Ebal, built an altar, pronounced blessings and curses (Josh 8:30–35; ch. 24), and called Israel to serve the LORD alone.
Leadership and Succession
From Moses' servant arising (Josh 1:1–2) to Joshua's farewell charges and death (ch. 23; 24:29–33), godly leadership is rooted in God's Word.
How it points to Christ
Joshua ('YHWH saves') prefigures Christ: he leads God's people into the promised inheritance just as Jesus leads us into the heavenly rest (Heb 4). Victories are won by covenant faithfulness, not human might—mirroring the Christian life lived by the cross and resurrection. Achan's judgment shows the wages of sin is death, a curse Christ bore for us (Josh 8:30–35; Gal 3:13). Joshua's rest was only partial; the author of Hebrews notes, 'if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day' (Heb 4:8). The true rest-giving Joshua is our great High Priest, Jesus Christ.
Key verses
- 1:9God commands Joshua to be strong and courageous because He is with him—a promise that undergirds the entire book.
- 1:8Meditating on the law day and night is the key to Israel's success in possessing the land.
- 4:24The memorial stones declare the LORD's mighty hand so that all peoples may know and fear Him.
- 6:20The fall of Jericho shows victory comes through obedience to God's word, not human strength.
- 21:43–45The narrative climax: the LORD gave Israel all He promised; not one word of His promises failed.
- 22:5Joshua's charge to the eastern tribes—to love, obey, and serve God wholeheartedly—sets the standard of devotion for all Israel.
- 23:11Joshua warns that careful love for the LORD is essential or Israel will lose God's protection in the land.
- 24:14–15Joshua's climactic call to choose the LORD over other gods—a foundational call to exclusive covenant loyalty.

Questions for reflection
- ·When God calls you into a new 'promised land,' do you step out in faith like Joshua, or give way to fear like the ten spies?
- ·Have you, like Achan, secretly kept 'devoted things' amid victory? How has God exposed hidden sin in your life?
- ·Joshua declared, 'as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD' (24:15). What does that resolution mean for your household today?
- ·God promised His presence, not an easy path (Josh 1:5–9). Which of His promises do you most need to stand on right now?
- ·Israel's rest was incomplete, pointing to the perfect rest in Christ. Are you living in Christ's rest, or still striving in your own strength?

Chapter 6
1Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in.
2And Jehovah said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thy hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valor.
3And ye shall compass the city, all the men of war, going about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days.
4And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets.
5And it shall be, that, when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall go up every man straight before him.
6And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said unto them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of Jehovah.
7And they said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let the armed men pass on before the ark of Jehovah.
8And it was so, that, when Joshua had spoken unto the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before Jehovah passed on, and blew the trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of Jehovah followed them.
9And the armed men went before the priests that blew the trumpets, and the rearward went after the ark, the priests blowing the trumpets as they went.
10And Joshua commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor let your voice be heard, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall ye shout.
11So he caused the ark of Jehovah to compass the city, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.
12And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of Jehovah.
13And the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of Jehovah went on continually, and blew the trumpets: and the armed men went before them; and the rearward came after the ark of Jehovah, the priests blowing the trumpets as they went.
14And the second day they compassed the city once, and returned into the camp: so they did six days.
15And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early at the dawning of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city seven times.
16And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for Jehovah hath given you the city.
17And the city shall be devoted, even it and all that is therein, to Jehovah: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.
18But as for you, only keep yourselves from the devoted thing, lest when ye have devoted it, ye take of the devoted thing; so would ye make the camp of Israel accursed, and trouble it.
19But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are holy unto Jehovah: they shall come into the treasury of Jehovah.
20So the people shouted, and the priests blew the trumpets; and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, that the people shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
21And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, both young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.
22And Joshua said unto the two men that had spied out the land, Go into the harlot's house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her.
23And the young men the spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; all her kindred also they brought out; and they set them without the camp of Israel.
24And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein; only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of Jehovah.
25But Rahab the harlot, and her father's household, and all that she had, did Joshua save alive; and she dwelt in the midst of Israel unto this day, because she hid the messengers, whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
26And Joshua charged them with an oath at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before Jehovah, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: with the loss of his first-born shall he lay the foundation thereof, and with the loss of his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.
27So Jehovah was with Joshua; and his fame was in all the land.
