When the Rivers Clap: Faith Rooted in the Song of Victory
Psalm 98 summons sea, rivers, and mountains to praise—trust is born from seeing God has already won.
A psalm.Sing to GOD a new song, who has worked wonders—who with right hand, and holy arm,has won victory. GOD has manifested victory, and displayed triumph in the sight of the nations— mindful of God’s steadfast love and faithfulness toward the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth beheld the victory of our God. Raise a shout to GOD, all the earth, break into joyous songs of praise! Sing praise to GOD with the lyre, with the lyre and melodious song. With trumpets and the blast of the hornraise a shout before GOD, the King. Let the sea and all within it thunder, the world and its inhabitants; let the rivers clap their hands, the mountains sing joyously together at the presence of GOD—who is coming to rule the earth:[God] will rule the world justly, and its peoples with equity.
Psalm 98 is a royal psalm of triumphant praise. The psalmist calls all the earth to sing because God's right hand and holy arm have accomplished a 'wonderful work' (Hebrew פָּעַל הִפְלָא, pa'al hifla'). This phrase will echo in Isaiah's Servant Songs and ultimately in the Gospels' portrait of Jesus. The psalm intentionally widens the audience from Israel to 'all the ends of the earth,' modeling a faith that trusts God's victory is universal and just.
