사라는, originally named Sarai, appears in the patriarchal narratives with little record of her early background, entering the biblical story as the wife of Abraham. When God established His covenant with Abraham and instituted the sign of circumcision, He personally changed Sarai's name to Sarah, declaring that she would be a mother of nations. This renaming was not merely a personal change but a theological marker, placing her at the heart of God's covenant purposes. God further promised that she herself would bear a son—Isaac, whose name means "he laughs"—as the living embodiment of divine faithfulness. Sarah's life was marked by a long and difficult wait. From the time she left her homeland with Abraham, she faced the seemingly unfulfilled promise of offspring. When three visitors announced that she would bear a son in her old age, Sarah laughed within herself, candidly acknowledging that both she and Abraham were well beyond the years of childbearing. Yet God's timing proved perfect: at the appointed time, Sarah conceived and gave birth to Isaac, the child of the covenant born to Abraham in his hundredth year. The New Testament writers of Hebrews and Galatians both honor her as an example of faith that embraced God's promise. Sarah's later years brought further testing. Abraham was called to bring Isaac to Mount Moriah, the holy mountain later associated with the Temple, where the binding of Isaac became a defining moment of faith shared by Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Sarah lived to be one hundred and twenty-seven years old and was buried in the Cave of Machpelah in Hebron, a patriarchal tomb that would also receive Abraham, Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob, and Leah. Her legacy endures as a witness to God's faithfulness through the long patience of waiting.
