Seth's story continues the family narrative of Genesis after the fall. After Abel was killed by Cain, Adam again knew his wife, and she bore a son whom she named Seth, declaring that God had appointed her another seed in place of Abel, because Cain had slain him (Genesis 4:25). The very name carried a confession of faith: even amid murder and exile, God provided another heir so that the line of godliness would not be cut off. Later, when Adam had lived a hundred and thirty years, he begot a son in his own likeness, after his image, and called his name Seth (Genesis 5:3). The wording deliberately echoes the creation account, where Adam was made in God's image, signaling that even after the fall, the divine likeness continued through Adam's descendants. Seth in turn became the father of Enosh, and it was then that people began to call on the name of the Lord (cf. Genesis 4:26), making him the ancestor of the godly line. In genealogy and theology, Seth represents the way of continuance. His descendants, together with the memory of Abel, form the main thread of the pre-flood human story. Scriptural tradition sometimes associates Seth's line with the "sons of God" of Genesis 6:2, whose identity is much debated, yet Seth's own record remains brief and dignified, reminding readers that God's image can pass from generation to generation and that, after tragedy, God can raise up a godly offspring to carry the promise forward.
