这段经文的意思
John 14 opens the Upper Room Discourse, spoken on the night of Jesus' arrest (vv. 1–31). It addresses the disciples' fear after the announcement that one of them will betray him and that he will 'go away.' The first section (vv. 1–7) grounds comfort in faith in God and in Christ, and answers Thomas's question with the sixth Johannine 'I am' saying: 'the way, the truth, and the life.' This is not three options but one Person, the sole path to the Father.
The second section (vv. 8–14) answers Philip's request to 'show us the Father' by clarifying mutual indwelling: 'I am in the Father and the Father in me' (v. 11). The works of Jesus authenticate this claim, and the promise that believers will do 'greater works' is tied to his departure 'to the Father'—that is, the sending of the Spirit and the spread of the gospel. Verses 13–14 on asking 'in my name' are read by the church as part of this Spirit-enabled access.
The third section (vv. 15–31) links love and obedience, then introduces 'another Comforter' (ἄλλος παράκλητος), the Spirit of truth, who indwells permanently. The discourse ends with Christ's distinctive peace (v. 27) and the sober note that 'the prince of the world' comes yet has no claim on him. The unit closes with the command to 'arise, let us go hence,' which transitions to chapters 15–17.
背景
John 14 sits inside the Upper Room Discourse (chs. 13–17), framed by the washing of the disciples' feet (13:1–17) and the high-priestly prayer of ch. 17. It presupposes the Johannine themes already developed: Jesus as the one sent by the Father (chs. 5–8), the Shepherd imagery of ch. 10, and the Lazarus–resurrection sign of ch. 11. The 'many dwelling places' language connects forward to the vine metaphor (15:1–8) and to the mutual indwelling theme of 17:20–26.
Within John's narrative, the chapter responds to the disciples' inability to grasp where Jesus is 'going' (13:36; 14:5). Scholars note that the phrase 'the Father is greater than I' (14:28) has been read variously: as a statement about the Father's ontological primacy within the Trinity (as later clarified in Nicene theology), or as a functional reference to the Son's voluntary subordination in the incarnation. The text itself does not settle the technical question; it simply frames the disciples' perspective, who found it natural for the sender to surpass the sent one. Cross-references in 1 John and Ephesians carry these themes of obedience, love, and Spirit-enabled access into the later New Testament.
原文关键词
- G2588 καρδία ('heart') in 14:1 is not the seat of affection alone in Johannine usage but the inner self where belief, doubt, and trouble arise; 'Let not your heart be troubled' targets the whole person (cf. 14:27).
- G3438 μοναί ('dwelling places/rooms,' 14:2, 23) is related to μένω ('to abide'), emphasizing permanent staying rather than temporary lodging; the same root links v. 2 to the mutual indwelling of 14:23.
- G2090 ἑτοιμάσω in 14:3 (verb ἑτοιμάζω, 'to prepare') is an aorist subjunctive in a conditional clause; the act of preparing is contingent on his going, and frames the disciples' hope of being received to himself.
相关经文
- Acts 4:12 Peter's Spirit-filled declaration that 'there is salvation in none other' echoes Jesus' exclusive claim in 14:6 and shows the apostolic preaching picking up the 'no one comes to the Father but by me' shape of the saying.
- Ephesians 2:18 Paul's wording—'access in one Spirit unto the Father'—matches John's picture of 14:6 (way to the Father) and 14:13 (asking in Jesus' name), making Spirit-enabled access a New Testament pattern rather than a single-writer idea.
- John 15:10 The reciprocal 'keep my commandments … abide in my love' mirrors 14:15 and 14:21, forming a continuous Johannine ethic in which love for Christ and obedience are the visible mark of indwelling.
常见问题
What does 'many dwelling places in my Father's house' mean?
The phrase is μοναί (G3438), related to μένω ('to abide'), and points to a permanent place with the Father where the disciples will be. It is not about many rooms in a building but about secure, lasting fellowship with God, expanded in 14:23 to mutual indwelling.
Is Jesus the only way to the Father?
John 14:6 states, 'no one cometh unto the Father, but by me.' Within John's theology the risen Christ is the exclusive revealer of the Father (1:18) and the only one sent by him (3:17). Acts 4:12 and 1 John 2:23 carry the same exclusive shape forward in the New Testament.
Who is 'another Comforter'?
'Comforter' (παράκλητος, GK 3876) in 14:16 is ἄλλος ('another of the same kind'), not ἕτερος ('another of a different kind'). The Spirit of truth continues the personal presence of Jesus with the disciples after his departure, teaching and reminding them of his words (14:26).
