约翰福音第3章——尼哥底母与重生
耶稣告诉尼哥底母，进入神的国度必须由水和圣灵而生；宣告人子必须被举起，使信的人有永生；施洗约翰也作见证，他必衰微，基督必兴旺。

- 1.有 一 個 法 利 賽 人 ， 名 叫 尼 哥 底 母 ， 是 猶 太 人 的 官 。Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
- 2.這 人 夜 裡 來 見 耶 穌 ， 說 「 拉 比 ， 我 們 知 道 你 是 由 神 那 來 作 師 傅 的 ； 因 為 你 所 行 的 神 蹟 ， 若 沒 有 神 同 在 ， 無 人 能 行 。 」the same came unto him by night, and said to him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that thou doest, except God be with him.
- 3.耶 穌 回 答 說 ： 「 我 實 實 在 在 地 告 訴 你 ， 人 若 不 重 生 ， 就 不 能 見 神 的 國 。 」Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
- 4.尼 哥 底 母 說 ： 「 人 已 經 老 了 ， 如 何 能 重 生 呢 ？ 豈 能 再 進 母 腹 生 出 來 嗎 ？ 」Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter a second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
- 5.耶 穌 說 ： 「 我 實 實 在 在 的 告 訴 你 ， 人 若 不 是 從 水 和 聖 靈 生 的 ， 就 不 能 進 神 的 國 。Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God!
- 6.從 肉 身 生 的 就 是 肉 身 ； 從 靈 生 的 就 是 靈 。That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
- 7.我 說 ： 『 你 們 必 須 重 生 』 ， 你 不 要 以 為 希 奇 。Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born anew.
- 8.風 隨 著 意 思 吹 ， 你 聽 見 風 的 響 聲 ， 卻 不 曉 得 從 那 裡 來 ， 往 那 裡 去 ； 凡 從 聖 靈 生 的 ， 也 是 如 此 。 」The wind bloweth where it will, and thou hearest the voice thereof, but knowest not whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
- 9.尼 哥 底 母 問 他 說 ： 「 怎 能 有 這 事 呢 ？ 」Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
- 10.耶 穌 回 答 說 ： 「 你 是 以 色 列 人 的 先 生 ， 還 不 明 白 這 事 嗎 ？Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou the teacher of Israel, and understandest not these things?
- 11.我 實 實 在 在 的 告 訴 你 ， 我 們 所 說 的 是 我 們 知 道 的 ； 我 們 所 見 證 的 是 我 們 見 過 的 ； 你 們 卻 不 領 受 我 們 的 見 證 。Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that which we know, and bear witness of that which we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.
- 12.我 對 你 們 說 地 上 的 事 ， 你 們 尚 且 不 信 ， 若 說 天 上 的 事 ， 如 何 能 信 呢 ？If I told you earthly things and ye believe not, how shall ye believe if I tell you heavenly things?
- 13.除 了 從 天 降 下 、 仍 舊 在 天 的 人 子 ， 沒 有 人 升 過 天 。And no one hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended out of heaven, even the Son of man, who is in heaven.
- 14.摩 西 在 曠 野 怎 樣 舉 蛇 ， 人 子 也 必 照 樣 被 舉 起 來 ，And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up;
- 15.叫 一 切 信 他 的 都 得 永 生 （ 或 作 ： 叫 一 切 信 的 人 在 他 裡 面 得 永 生 ） 。that whosoever believeth may in him have eternal life.
- 16.「 神 愛 世 人 ， 甚 至 將 他 的 獨 生 子 賜 給 他 們 ， 叫 一 切 信 他 的 ， 不 至 滅 亡 ， 反 得 永 生 。For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life.
- 17.因 為 神 差 他 的 兒 子 降 世 ， 不 是 要 定 世 人 的 罪 （ 或 作 ： 審 判 世 人 ； 下 同 ） ， 乃 是 要 叫 世 人 因 他 得 救 。For God sent not the Son into the world to judge the world; but that the world should be saved through him.
- 18.信 他 的 人 ， 不 被 定 罪 ； 不 信 的 人 ， 罪 已 經 定 了 ， 因 為 他 不 信 神 獨 生 子 的 名 。He that believeth on him is not judged: he that believeth not hath been judged already, because he hath not believed on the name of the only begotten Son of God.
- 19.光 來 到 世 間 ， 世 人 因 自 己 的 行 為 是 惡 的 ， 不 愛 光 ， 倒 愛 黑 暗 ， 定 他 們 的 罪 就 是 在 此 。And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil.
- 20.凡 作 惡 的 便 恨 光 ， 並 不 來 就 光 ， 恐 怕 他 的 行 為 受 責 備 。For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his works should be reproved.
- 21.但 行 真 理 的 必 來 就 光 ， 要 顯 明 他 所 行 的 是 靠 神 而 行 。 」But he that doeth the truth cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest, that they have been wrought in God.
- 22.這 事 以 後 ， 耶 穌 和 門 徒 到 了 猶 太 地 ， 在 那 裡 居 住 ， 施 洗 。After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.

- 27.約 翰 說 ： 「 若 不 是 從 天 上 賜 的 ， 人 就 不 能 得 甚 麼 。John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it have been given him from heaven.

- 29.娶 新 婦 的 就 是 新 郎 ； 新 郎 的 朋 友 站 著 ， 聽 見 新 郎 的 聲 音 就 甚 喜 樂 。 故 此 ， 我 這 喜 樂 滿 足 了 。He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, that standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is made full.
- 30.他 必 興 旺 ， 我 必 衰 微 。 」He must increase, but I must decrease.
- 31.「 從 天 上 來 的 是 在 萬 有 之 上 ； 從 地 上 來 的 是 屬 乎 地 ， 他 所 說 的 也 是 屬 乎 地 。 從 天 上 來 的 是 在 萬 有 之 上 。He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is of the earth, and of the earth he speaketh: he that cometh from heaven is above all.
- 32.他 將 所 見 所 聞 的 見 證 出 來 ， 只 是 沒 有 人 領 受 他 的 見 證 。What he hath seen and heard, of that he beareth witness; and no man receiveth his witness.
- 33.那 領 受 他 見 證 的 ， 就 印 上 印 ， 證 明 神 是 真 的 。He that hath received his witness hath set his seal to this, that God is true.
- 34.神 所 差 來 的 就 說 神 的 話 ， 因 為 神 賜 聖 靈 給 他 是 沒 有 限 量 的 。For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for he giveth not the Spirit by measure.

- 36.信 子 的 人 有 永 生 ； 不 信 子 的 人 得 不 著 永 生 （ 原 文 作 不 得 見 永 生 ） ， 神 的 震 怒 常 在 他 身 上 。 」He that believeth on the Son hath eternal life; but he that obeyeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.

尼哥底母为何在夜间来见耶稣？
经文只说他夜间前来（第2节）。约翰并未明确说明原因，读者只能揣测可能的缘由：或因畏惧在法利赛同侪中的名声，或渴望不受打扰地私下交谈。福音书并未在诸种可能之间作出裁断。
“由水和圣灵而生”是什么意思？
经文本身在第6节以“血肉生血肉、圣灵生灵”来解释第5节。约翰福音的历代读者历来将“水”与约翰先前所施的洗礼以及约翰文献中提及的活水相联，而将“圣灵”理解为重生的神圣源头。本章并未对这两个词分别加以详细阐发。
第3章如何将“人子被举起”与永生相联？
