Wisdom 4 — True Honor: Virtue, Early Death, and the Righteous Taken Up
Chapter 4 teaches that genuine honor rests on virtue rather than progeny or longevity, and that the early death of the righteous is itself a sign of God's favor.
经文
Better than this is childlessness with virtue, for in the memory of virtue is immortality, because it is known both by God and by men.
When it is present, men imitate it, and they long for it when it has gone; and throughout all time it marches crowned in triumph, victor in the contest for prizes that are undefiled.
But the prolific brood of the ungodly will be of no use, and none of their illegitimate seedlings will strike a deep root or take a firm hold.
For even if they put forth boughs for a while, standing insecurely they will be shaken by the wind, and by the violence of the winds they will be uprooted.
The branches will be broken off before they come to maturity, and their fruit will be useless, not ripe enough to eat, and good for nothing.
For children born of unlawful unions are witnesses of evil against their parents when God examines them.
But the righteous man, though he die early, will be at rest.
- 8.因为年老并不因时间的长短而受到尊敬,也不以年岁的多少来衡量;For old age is not honored for length of time, nor measured by number of years;
but understanding is gray hair for men, and a blameless life is ripe old age.
There was one who pleased God and was loved by him, and while living among sinners he was taken up.
He was caught up lest evil change his understanding or guile deceive his soul.
For the fascination of wickedness obscures what is good, and roving desire perverts the innocent mind.
- 13.虽短暂却圆满,成就了长久的岁月;Being perfected in a short time, he fulfilled long years;
for his soul was pleasing to the Lord, therefore he took him quickly from the midst of wickedness.
Yet the peoples saw and did not understand, nor take such a thing to heart, that God’s grace and mercy are with his elect, and he watches over his holy ones.
The Triumph of the Righteous The righteous man who has died will condemn the ungodly who are living, and youth that is quickly perfected will condemn the prolonged old age of the unrighteous man.
For they will see the end of the wise man, and will not understand what the Lord purposed for him, and for what he kept him safe.
- 18.他们将会看见,并且会藐视他,但耶和华要藐视他们。之后他们将成为被羞辱的尸体,在死人中永远成为可憎之物;They will see, and will have contempt for him, but the Lord will laugh them to scorn. After this they will become dishonored corpses, and an outrage among the dead for ever;
because he will dash them speechless to the ground, and shake them from the foundations; they will be left utterly dry and barren, and they will suffer anguish, and the memory of them will perish.
The Final Judgment They will come with dread when their sins are reckoned up, and their lawless deeds will convict them to their face.
The chapter opens with a deliberate inversion of conventional honor. Wisdom declares that childlessness coupled with virtue surpasses a prolific lineage, because the memory of virtue confers a kind of immortality — virtue is recognized by God and by people, is imitated while present, and is longed for when absent (verses 1–2). The contrast is then sharpened against the offspring of the ungodly: their illegitimate brood, described in botanical terms, never strikes deep or holds firm, is shaken by wind, broken before maturity, and bears fruit that is useless and inedible (verses 3–6). The argument is not about biology but about moral legitimacy: children stand as witnesses against their parents at divine examination.
The middle section turns from progeny to lifespan. Old age is not honored by length of time, the text insists, but understanding is the true gray hair and a blameless life is true ripe old age (verses 8–9). This frames the famous vignette of the righteous man taken up early: he pleased God, was loved, lived among sinners, and was caught up before evil could change his understanding or guile deceive his soul (verses 10–12). His short life is therefore not a tragedy but a completion — he fulfilled long years in a brief span because his soul was pleasing to the Lord (verses 13–14). The onlookers, however, miss this entirely (verse 15).
The final verses shift to judgment. The dead righteous will condemn the living ungodly; the wise man's end will be visible but misunderstood; the Lord will laugh at those who scorn him, and they will become dishonored corpses (verses 16–18). They are dashed to the ground, shaken from the foundations, left barren, and their memory perishes (verse 19). The chapter closes by turning this forward into a reckoning: they will come in dread as their sins are tallied and their lawless deeds confront them face to face (verse 20). Honor, the chapter insists, is decided not by longevity or progeny but by how one stands before God.
背景
The chapter has no surrounding chapter text supplied beyond itself, so context is drawn from its own internal structure. Wisdom 4 stands between Wisdom 3 (which meditated on suffering, childlessness, and early death as seeming goods) and Wisdom 5 (in which the ungodly directly confront the vindication of the righteous they once oppressed). Within the chapter, two halves mirror each other: verses 1–6 address progeny, and verses 7–20 address lifespan, with the early death of the righteous serving as the hinge. A superscription-style phrase, 'The Triumph of the Righteous,' appears at verse 16, marking the turn toward open judgment. The note provided identifies this as a backfilled chapter outside any priority set; no cross references or original-language entries were supplied for this passage.
Why does Wisdom 4 praise childlessness with virtue over a large family?
Because the chapter measures worth by moral legitimacy rather than by progeny. Virtue is remembered, imitated, and honored by God, whereas the offspring of the ungodly are described as unstable and ultimately useless, and even serve as witnesses against their parents at divine examination (verses 1–6).
Who is the righteous man taken up early in verses 10–14?
The passage does not name him. He is presented typologically as one who pleased God, was loved, lived among sinners, and was removed before evil could corrupt him. The chapter itself identifies him only by these qualities; the provided material supplies no name or identification beyond what the text states.
How does the chapter connect early death to honor?
It redefines honor away from years lived and toward character possessed. Gray hair is understanding, ripe old age is a blameless life, and the one taken up early is said to have fulfilled long years in a short time because his soul was pleasing to the Lord (verses 8–14). Longevity without virtue is therefore not true honor.
