Psalms

Why this book was written

To provide Israel and subsequent generations of worshipers with prayers and songs for public worship and personal devotion, the Psalms teach God's attributes, the grace of creation and election, the goodness of the Law, the meaning of suffering, repentance and forgiveness, and hope in the King and Messiah; the authors aim to lead worshipers into honest fellowship with God and to foster praise and mutual encouragement within the covenant community.

Major themes

How it points to Christ

The Psalms are quoted extensively in the New Testament. Jesus on the cross cried the opening of Psalm 22:1, and He was identified as the Son of David in fulfillment of the messianic psalms (cf. Matthew 22:41–45). Psalm 110 is cited by Peter in Acts 2 to demonstrate that the risen Christ is David's Lord. Across the Psalter, the suffering, death, resurrection, ascension, and reign of Christ are foreshadowed in the psalms of lament, kingship, and trust.

Key verses

• 1:1–3The programmatic opening: the blessed life delights in God's Word and avoids the wicked, framing the two ways of the Psalter.
• 22:1'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?'—quoted by the crucified Messiah, revealing the deepest cry of the sufferer.
• 23:1–4The classic confession of trust, 'The Lord is my shepherd,' declaring God's presence through the valley of the shadow of death.
• 51:10–12The paradigmatic prayer for a clean heart and renewed spirit—repentance and new creation.
• 110:1'Sit at my right hand'—a royal-Messianic psalm frequently cited in the New Testament to proclaim Christ's exaltation.
• 119:105'Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path'—the Word as the believer's daily guide.
• 130:3–4If God marks iniquities, who can stand?—revealing the meeting of God's holiness and mercy in forgiveness.
• 150:6'Let everything that has breath praise the Lord'—the Psalter's climactic call for universal worship.

Questions for reflection

• ·As you read the Psalms, are you willing, like the psalmists, to bring your honest emotions — joy, grief, fear, or confusion — openly before God?
• ·Psalm 1 compares the one who delights in and meditates on God's law day and night to a tree by streams of water. How can you let God's Word take deeper root in your life?
• ·In times of hardship, can you still declare, as in Psalm 23, 'The Lord is my shepherd,' and experience God's presence and provision in your lack?
• ·The penitential psalms (such as Psalm 51) teach that confession is the doorway to grace. Are you willing to honestly face your sin and ask God to cleanse you by His mercy and faithfulness?
• ·Psalm 22 moves from the sufferer's cry to universal praise. How does this shape your understanding of hope in suffering and fix your eyes on the risen Lord?
